Shingles is caused by reactivation of the chickenpox virus, usually as we get older or when our immune system is run down. Antiviral treatment works best if started within 72 hours of the rash appearing, so timing matters — and the pharmacy is faster than waiting for a GP slot.

The consultation is private and takes about 15 to 20 minutes.
We take a brief history of your symptoms, examine the rash, and confirm whether it is consistent with shingles. Where appropriate, we prescribe a course of antiviral medication (typically aciclovir or valaciclovir) on the spot.
Shingles affecting the eye area can lead to complications. If the rash is anywhere on your face — particularly near or in the eye — we will likely refer you to your GP or A&E for urgent assessment by an ophthalmologist, rather than treating in the pharmacy.
